Choosing Flooring For the Bedroom – Complete Guide

Each element of the decor and furnishings of the bedroom should help maintain a cozy atmosphere and provide the most comfortable conditions. Choosing the right flooring that remains warm and pleasant to the touch is especially important even in the winter months. In this article, we will look at the three most common types of coatings and find out which one is best suited for the bedroom.

What should the floor of the bedroom be like basic criteria

Bedrooms rarely contain a lot of furniture, and therefore the load on the flooring is minimal. In such a room there is moderate humidity and a stable temperature, and therefore wear resistance and strength are not fundamental criteria on which to base when choosing a material for a bedroom. Much more important aspects are:

  • comfort – the material should be pleasant to the touch;
  • safety – the composition should not contain toxic or allergenic substances;
  • noise level – the material should not rattle when objects fall or walk around the room;
  • aesthetics – the coating should easily fit into any interior.

For the bedroom they usually choose laminate, parquet boards quartz vinyl tiles. Let’s check how well these materials meet the criteria stated above.

Tactile sensations

The sleeping room should have a covering that will be warm at any time of the year.

Laminate does not live up to expectations in this regard. Even if the room is well heated, the material remains cold. To achieve comfortable conditions, you can additionally install a “warm floor” system, but this option will be very expensive. You can also use soft carpeting, but then a much more rational solution would be to purchase more affordable linoleum.

Parquet boards are warmer than laminate flooring because natural wood, characterized by high thermal conductivity, is used as the top layer.

Partvinyl floornatural quartz is added, which is not inferior in thermal conductivity to ordinary wood. This coating easily heats up to room temperature.

Health Safety

At first glance, laminate is an environmentally friendly material, because it mostly consists of wood fiber. However, there is one caveat – to connect the coating layers, they use resin or glue containing formaldehyde, which is a strong toxin. When purchasing a laminate, you should carefully study the description, where the concentration of this substance should be indicated. In addition, formaldehyde is actively released at high temperatures, and therefore the use of laminate in conjunction with a “warm floor” system is a rather dangerous undertaking for health.

Parquet board is considered a safe coating due to the use of exclusively natural materials, however, there is also a small nuance here. Wax or varnish is applied on top of the boards, which do not always meet environmental safety requirements.

The quartz-vinyl construction includes 8-9 layers connected using hot pressing, in which there is no need to resort to resins or glue. The concentration of potentially hazardous chemical compounds for humans is within normal limits. In addition, polyvinyl chloride is used as the main protective layer, which prevents bacterial activity.

Noise level

During the installation process, the surface of the laminate acquires properties reminiscent of a drum membrane and therefore produces a noticeable noise when walking. If any objects fall, quite loud sounds will follow. To dampen mechanical vibrations, it is recommended to use a damper substrate.

Thanks to the use of softwood as a covering, parquet boards are characterized by much higher sound insulation properties. It is necessary first of all to pay attention to the thickness of the material: the thicker it is, the less noise there will be. At the same time, a damping substrate will still be required.

Quartz vinyl is the quietest of the three materials, which is achieved through a multilayer structure that helps dampen impact noise up to 19 dB. There is absolutely no need to use a damper substrate.

Appearance of floor covering

Laminatepresented in a wide variety of design options with imitation of natural textures. The most common textures are stone, ceramics, and various types of wood.

Parquet boards cannot boast of such variety due to the top layer of natural wood.

For the production of quartz-vinyl tiles, a special decorative DECO layer is used, created through high-quality printing. The technology allows you to apply wood, leather, stone, ceramic, and other textures with high resolution. Since transparent polyvinyl chloride is used as a protective layer, a unique 3D effect is provided.

Caring for bedroom flooring

To care for laminate flooring, both dry and wet cleaning are suitable. The main thing here is to use as little water as possible and do not forget to wipe with a dry cloth, since the material does not tolerate moisture well. If this is not done, the laminate will gradually begin to swell and crack. The use of acids, chlorine, and alkali is contraindicated. Only use chemicals that are specifically designed for this type of coating.

The parquet board should also not be heavily moistened, especially if it has not been pre-treated with varnish. Due to regular contact with water, the wood will begin to expand and contract as it dries, and gaps will appear between the dies where small debris will accumulate. The use of cleaning products containing chlorine or abrasive particles is contraindicated, as they can damage the coating.

Unlike other varieties, quartz vinyl is completely waterproof, but wet cleaning using products that contain chlorine, acetone, or abrasive particles is not recommended.

Choosingflooringfor the bedroom, you should not sacrifice some characteristics for the sake of others or because of the desire to save money. It’s better to pay extra, but at the same time get warm material that won’t creak with every step. The bedroom should provide maximum comfort and coziness, and therefore there is no need to make any compromises.
